Title

C/2020 R4 ATLAS - A spectroscopic cross section through the coma

About this image

A low resolution R~550 spectrum image of a cross section through the coma.

The spectrum of the emission from the central coma. (The dust component was subtracted using a G2v spectrum template modified to match the shape of the dust continuum in the comet spectrum.) Note the high intensity of the CN emission line at 390nm

The intensity across the coma of the emission components CN, C2 and the  sunlit dust. Note the similarity in the distribution of the C2 and CN components compared with C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) where the C2 component was significantly narrower
