About this image

The transparency on this night was very poor but, as is often the way, the seeing was good. I was getting a star FWHM of 1.9" so I decided to do a quick image of this familiar object. The stars aren't perfectly round due to tracking errors but I have applied a weak unsharp mask to bring out some detail in the nebula. It is quite a small object, only around 1 arcmin across at the narrowest point, so something similar to the apparent size of Jupiter. Many of the recent high res images online are taken using planetary camera techniques (lots of very short exposures) and I might try that with this camera using a small ROI sometime.
