Transit & shadow transit of Io, 28th August 2021

About this image

A transit and shadow transit of Io observed in good conditions. The seeing was II-III, with periods of II. The transit started while Jupiter was behind a nearby chimney, and had nearly finished when the sky clouded over. The image is a montage of three of the best individual images acquired during the event. Io is visible against the cloud belts, two shadow diameters to the left and slightly above the shadow itself, as shown in the enlarged inset. It appears as a brighter equatorial strip, sandwiched between the darker-toned polar regions.
