About this image

This image shows NGC936 at upper right, and the dimly seen (mag. 12.9) NGC941 at lower left. Both galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in January 1785.

NGC936 is a barred lenticular galaxy. The concentrations of stars at the ends of the bar has invited comparisons with the TIE Fighter that appears in the Star Wars films, hence the name Darth Vader's Galaxy. Distance c.60million ly.

NGC941 is a spiral galaxy. Distance c.55million ly.

Bortle 7/8. Light cloud.
