About this image

Discovered by Jean-Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan in or before 1731. He described it as a star "surrounded by a brilliance very similar to that which produces, as I believe, the atmosphere of our Sun, if it were dense enough & extensive enough to be visible in Telescopes at a similar distance."

Distance c.1,600ly. The star embedded in the nebula is the variable NU Orionis (HD37061).
