M67 Open cluster, known as the King Cobra

About this image

M67 (or NGC 2682 )is an Open cluster, known as the King Cobra or sometimes the Golden eye cluster. Located in the constellation of Cancer.

Amateur astronomy wise, it seems to be a rarely photographed object – don’t know why as I think it is a beauty.

It is thought to be between 3.2 to 5 Billion years old and approx 2,800 Light years from us.

To help you to visualise/gauge the size of it in our skies, M67 is approx the same size as the full moon. It is about 20 Light years across.

Messier 67 is one of the oldest known open clusters, the few ones known to be older are not as close to us as M67.

It contains around 500 stars with about 100 stars similar to our sun. It contains 11 bright orange K-type giant stars and about 200 white dwarfs. Excluding around 30 Blue stragglers, the stars in M67 are all approx the same age and lie at the same distance.

Processing; Deep sky stacker, PixInsight with final tweaks in Photoshop + Topaz DeNoise AI.

Clear skies all.
