About this image

Discovered by Pierre Méchain in March 1781, this elliptical galaxy is estimated to contain around 400 billion stars. The barred spiral galaxy NGC4394 can be seen faintly at upper left.

Distance c.60million ly. Diameter c.125,000 ly. Apparent magnitude 10.0.
