About this image

The latest batch of Starlink satellites went up on Friday. They were surprisingly bright on Saturday morning so this morning (Sunday), at the end of a night of comet observing I scheduled the telescope to slew to P Cyg since, at 0523, the train was predicted to cross this field from here. I thought it would be nice to have one of my own images to illustrate the effect of the satellites on astro imaging in any future talks. They did cross the frame as predicted but, unfortunately, this perfect shot was ruined by an aircraft which flew over the field a few seconds later. How unlucky is that? A much wider field video covering most of Cygnus and showing the train and the plane is here

Great stuff Nick. What camera and settings did you use for the wide field video which is really spectacular?

The video used a Sony A7s with a Canon 85 mm f/1.2L lens. The lens is on loan from Martin Mobberley who used it with film back in the late 80s when he an I were doing nova patrols. It is a lovely lens and I hope he never wants it back! The settings were f/1.4, 1/25s, ISO 12600.
