About this image

This planetary nebula was discovered by William Herschel in February 1786. Distance perhaps 3,300-5,300ly.

It reveals many different faces according to the instruments used to observe it, showing a complex structure of concentric gas shells. In this image it is seen at its simplest. This gives a good indication of why these nebulae were first likened to planets.
