About this image

This brief 5-minute exposure came near the end of a long (for me) observing session, just before bed.

NGC4762, an edge-on lenticular galaxy, and NGC4754 (upper right), an unbarred lenticular galaxy were discovered by William Herschel in 1784. NGC4754 presents a small, bright oval surrounded by a faint shell. NGC4762 presents a thin edge-on disk with a bright unobstructed nucleus.

Distortions in the disk of NGC4762 suggest it has been in interaction with another galaxy, but it is uncertain whether NGC4754 is involved, partly because of the difficulty of establishing the precise distances of both galaxies. NGC4762 lies perhaps 60million ly away from Earth, NGC4754 about 50million ly.

Bortle 7/8. Moon waxing gibbous, 13 days, 97% illuminated.
