NGC5529 Edge-on Spiral Galaxy in Boӧtes

About this image

This edge-on spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in May 1785. The image shows a thin disk with a bright, narrow central core. The disk is about 250,000ly in diameter, about twice the size of the Milky Way. Distance c.144million ly. Apparent mag. 11.9.

The faint spot below the galaxy (about level with the top star of the 'domino three'), is another spiral galaxy, PGC 50952 (apparent mag. 15.3). This lies almost twice as far away as NGC5529, c.336million ly.

Numerous other galaxies lie nearby. A longer exposure may well reveal some of them next time!
