About this image

Having seen a Hubble image of this extraordinary object, I wanted to see if I could detect it myself with the aid of the Unistellar's 'enhanced vision' technology. Listed in Interstellarum as 'challenging' (herausforderungen - my copy is in German), it was located without difficulty. However, a 60min exposure produced this faint image in which the two main components, the 'spindle' to the left and the vertical ring to the right, are only just about discernible. The former is c.43,000 ly in diameter, the latter 50,000 ly.

Thought to be the product of an intergalactic collision, Mayall's Object (named after its discoverer, Nicholas Mayall) lies about 465million ly away.

Moon at first quarter, 47%, (and the usual Bortle 7/8) not ideal, so better conditions may produce a better result next time. Herausforderungen!
