About this image

This edge-on barred spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

The image shows a bright nucleus but with no pronounced bulge, considerable mottling in the arms (especially to the left) which extend faintly beyond the bright central area.

Distance c.70million ly, diameter c.90,000 ly, apparent mag. 12.0.

Bortle 7/8, Moon waxing crescent 38%.
