Supernova 2022hrs in NGC4647

About this image

The field containing supernova SN2022hrs in NGC4647. At magnitude ~12.7 it was bright enough to attempt a spectrum with the objective prism, shown in the inset at the same scale. The three broad absorption bands characteristic of this type Ia supernova are visible and indicated by the tick marks.  They correspond to the main features in the spectra by Claudio Balcon at ~4250, 4800 and 6000 Angstrom (from left to right).

More images can be found on the Bright Supernova web site.

The field of the main image is 22 x 22 arc minutes with north (and red in the spectrum inset) to the right.
