About this image

This spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici was discovered by Pierre Méchain in March 1781. This image is dominated by the large, bright nucleus surrounded by a fainter ring and a much larger and even fainter outer ring that displays barely visible traces of spiral arms.

Distance c.16million ly. Diameter c.50,000 ly. Apparent mag. 8.9.

Bortle 7/8, light cloud, no Moon.
