Large Sunspot Areas

About this image

Now that the large sunspot group , AR 13055, has just passed around the western limb, the plot shows its area evolution compared to that of AR 13014 in May 2022.  Both groups developed on the visible disk and peaked in size just before the central meridian before slowly reducing in size as they progressed towards the western limb.  AR 13014 had a peak area of 1200 Millionths of the Sun’s visible Hemisphere (MSH) on May 22 and AR 13055 peaked at 1120 MSH on July 11. The areas have been measured from SDO HMI images every 12 hours.
