About this image

This faint spiral galaxy was discovered by the American astronomer Lewis Swift in June 1885. A supernova, SN2017ixv, appeared here in December 2017.

This image reveals a relatively bright central area surrounded by a fainter disk and a larger and even fainter disk beyond with little signs of structure.

Distance c.100.5million ly. Apparent magnitude c.12.6.
