About this image

Looking like the smoke from a gigantic celestial cigar, this emission nebula was discovered by Giovanni Battista Hodierna before 1654. It features, amongst other things, the wonderfully named Herbig-Haro objects, first discovered there, as well as the slightly less attractively named Bok globules. Just sayin'!

Distance c.4,100ly. Dimensions c.55x22ly.
