About this image

This much-observed spiral galaxy was discovered by Johann Bode in December 1774.

This image, obtained using the COAST in Tenerife, presents the galaxy as a large, ghostly presence, the glowing nucleus buried in an opaque disk from which emanate two gigantic spiral arms.

Diameter c.90,000ly. Distance c.12million ly. Apparent mag. 6.9.
