About this image

This elusive lenticular galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in September 1784. The nearby red giant, B Andromedae (Mirach), with an apparent mag. of 2.05, tends to swamp the galaxy making it tricky to observe, hence the 'ghost' reference. At around 10,000ly in diameter, it can be considered a dwarf galaxy. Apparent mag. 10.3. Distance c.10million ly.

The image shows a small, hazy ball and the galaxy's bright core.

Bortle 7/8, no Moon.
