About this image

I haven't seen or imaged the moon since I started dabbling again in astronomy a decade ago... However circumstances finally conspired to force me to give it a try once more!

I was planning a small 'outreach ' session (see observation on 13th Sept.) with mainly deeps sky objects at full moon. While not a good time for serious imaging, previous experience had shown that short exposures of bright targets could still work with the moon at around first quarter - but at full moon? The obvious thing to do, if all else failed, was to show people the moon; but I am not a student in lunar studies, and I imagined a full moon would not show much contrast (the limb is favoured, I understand, for the best views).

But my experiment the night before the planned event took me by surprise - in a good way. I was pleased to see quite a lot of detail and several main features. I used a red filter with 1/100th sec exposure. The image was stretched slightly in Pixinsight for greater contrast, and sharpened a little with some deconvolution; but 'what you see is what I got' as it were....

In the end, the couple I had invited coudnt make it :) , but I was glad to have been forced to look, once more, at our immediate astronomical neighbour.
