About this image

Another look at this loose open cluster, this time using the COAST in Tenerife. The cluster was discovered by William Herschel in 1788. It is set in a rich star field and it is difficult to be sure which stars are and are not members.

The most obvious feature is the triangle of mag. 8/9 stars near the centre of this image. The star at the bottom of the triangle (DL Cas) is a binary system containing a Cepheid used to compute the distance of the cluster (not by me, I hasten to add). The pair of bright stars at centre right (HD236449, HD236446) are both class K stars. The bright star at the top of the frame (HD2626) is a mag. 5.9 class B star.

Distance c.6,600ly. Age c.76million ly.
