About this image

This image of M77, a barred spiral galaxy in Cetus, was obtained using the COAST instrument in Tenerife with an exposure of 120sec (unfortunately I was here at the time!). The galaxy was discovered by Pierre Méchain in October 1780. It is a type 2 Seyfert galaxy.

The image shows a bright core with a distinct bar surrounded by a larger, dimmer disk showing signs of structure.

Distance c.47million ly. Diameter c.170,000ly. Apparent dimensions 7.1'x6.0'. Apparent mag. 9.6.
