About this image
A spectrum of V381 Lac when exceptionally bright
V381 Lac is a variable star showing R CrB type deep fades due to episodes of dust production. It is classified spectroscopically as an N type Carbon star which show strong molecular bands from Carbon containing compounds.
In early October it was reported in vsnet-alert 26960 to be exceptionally bright at around V mag 11.8. This spectrum taken 2022-10-18 shows a typical high state spectrum with no evidence of the strong NaD and [NII] emission lines seen during fades. The spectrum is compared with standard C-N spectra and with spectra from a previous study, The variable V381 Lac and its possible connection with the R CrB phenomenon, C. Rossi et al MNRAS 456, 2550–2557 (2016)
The lack of emission matches a spectrum taken there in the high brightness state on October 2012, though the continuum and spectral features at the shorter wavelengths better match a spectrum taken during a fade in September 2014
The spectrum is available for download in digital format from the BAA spectroscopy database
