About this image

This class IV3p open cluster in Monoceros has the distinction of being the first cluster or nebula observed by William Herschel. He discovered it in December 1779. The bright star is 10 Monocerotis. It is one of the closest open clusters to the Sun.

Distance c.1,060ly. Age c.30.9million years. Apparent mag. 4. 

Bortle 7/8, light cloud, Moon waxing gibbous 98%, 13 days old, humidity 100%.
