Title

NGC128 & a Gaggle of Galaxies in Pisces

About this image

I was attracted to this area of Pisces by the 'triple galaxy', NGC128, only to discover a gaggle of galaxies! The two brightest and largest objects , NGC125 & NGC128, were discovered by William Herschel on Christmas Day 1790. But it was only 60 years later that the other three NGC galaxies were identified by Bindon Stoney, an engineer who worked with William Parsons at Birr castle. (Stoney sported the impressive middle name of 'Blood'!) All but one of these galaxies, NGC125, are members of the NGC128 Galaxy Group. NGC127 is a spiral galaxy, but the others are lenticulars. Other images show that NGC127 is attached to NGC128 by an arm of material. NGC128 is notable for its large central bulge shaped like a bar of soap. PGC212532 is a faint galaxy unassociated with the group.
