About this image

This near face-on spiral galaxy in Pisces was discovered by William Herschel in December 1784. The large central nucleus is surrounded by multiple, thin, tightly wound arms.

This image shows the dominant bright nucleus surrounded by a fainter disk with faint traces of a much larger more differentiated disk beyond. Although not seen here, the disk extends at least as far as the bright star to lower left.

Distance c.90million ly. Apparent size 5.2' x 3.9'. Diameter c.171,000ly. Apparent mag. 10.3-11.2.

NGC490 appears as a tiny dim spot. It is a lenticular galaxy, apparent mag. 14.4, and was discovered in December 1850 by Bindon Stoney.

Bortle 7/8, full Moon 15 days old.
