About this image

Discovered by William Herschel on Christmas Eve 1783, this 13th mag. irregular galaxy has a preponderance of young blue stars as seen in the blue tint of the image. The galaxy appears as an elongated streak with a brighter central region, a little larger and brighter to the north, fainter and smaller to the south.

Distance c.80million ly. Apparent length 2.6'. Size c.55,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, full Moon 15 days old.
