About this image

This mag. 13 spiral galaxy in Andromeda gives its name to a group of around twenty galaxies. It was discovered by Lewis Swift in September 1885 using a 16" refractor.

The image shows a near edge-on spiral with a bright central region set in a diffuse band fading at the extremities.

Distance c.235million ly. Size c.115,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, full Moon 15 days old.
