Title

A Christmas Star on a Christmas Tree

About this image

This class IV3pn open cluster in Monoceros is usually shown embedded in nebulosity. But here, as a special Christmas treat, it is revealed in all its Christmas Tree beauty with N up. For the purposes of this image, the very bright star, 15 Monocerotis, is taken as the Christmas Star with the diagonal line of stars at lower right as the base of the tree. A pretty picture!

Discovered by William Herschel in January 1784. Distance c.2,600ly.
