About this image

Looking down from space for a change.

There is an aging fleet of NOAA Weather satellites (only a couple working now) which can easily be accessed with a simple radio receiver set up .

I use a basic Software Defined Radio and a homebuilt "all sky" Quadrifilliar Helix Antenna

Signal recieved, recorded as a wave file and processed using (also aging) software and I have here used the IR data for highlighting the cloud layers.

This is basially a monochrome fax image false colour added. There are channels for different sensors (not all of which still work)

Newer satellites use digital transmissions and are far more complex and (for me) harder to access. Will be sorry to see the eventual demise of these old analogue craft.
