Title

NGC7788 & NGC7790 Open Clusters in Cassiopeia

About this image

NGC7790 (top left) and NGC7788 (below centre) make an attractive double cluster to light Christmas Eve.

NGC7788 is a class I2p (highly concentrated) open cluster. It was discovered by John Herschel in October 1829, just over forty years after his father, William, discovered NGC7790 (class III2p - no concentration). Both are around mag. 9 and are only c.15' apart, so why WH missed NGC7788 is unclear.

Bortle 7/8, cold (-5˚C).
