About this image

This image was obtained one day before the Earth crosses the comet's orbital plane. The broad dust fan is now almost edge on. The broad tail to the right with the parabolic leading edge near the coma centre is nearest us. The fainter dust tail to the left is further away. The bifurcated ion tail is faintly visible and goes out of the frame. The coma diameter is around 22 arcmin and the total magnitude is now around 5.8.
