About this image

This faint (app. mag. 13.3) barred spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in September 1802. The bright star is HD74904, apparent mag. 7.10. The galaxy is 100,000x further from us than the star, which puts things in perspective, something I find it easy to lose sight of.

The image shows a large central bulge with bar, surrounded by the faint haze of the disk. Other images show that the disk extends to the three bright nearby stars.

Distance c.180 million ly. (Distance of HD74904 c.1,800ly) Diameter c. 85,000ly.
