About this image

This spiral galaxy in Ursa Major was discovered by William Herschel in January 1788.

The image shows a bright nucleus set in a diffuse disk, with little sign of structure apart from what appears to be a thick dust lane on the near side.

Distance c.35million ly. Size c.90,000 ly. Apparent mag. 10.2.

Moon waxing gibbous 12 days old 90%.
