A grand spiral and a Dwarf

About this image

Although M101 is such a brilliant target on its own, I was fascinated by its gravitional interaction with NG5474 (seen in the upper left of the wide field shot). NGC5474 is a relatively rare dwarf spiral galaxy. With a little imagination you can see the faint spiral arms in the distorted shape of the fuzzy dwarf galaxy. It is thought that interactions with M101 may be the cause of its distorted shape
