Kp8 Aurora Event from Cambridge
About this image
Warnings of a very energetic aurora event had been arriving on my phone all evening of 23rd April. Unfortunately, we had clouds - as usual. However, inspecting the video from my all-sky camera this morning reveals colours from the aurora through the clouds. Note the recorded time on the image is BST.
A rather puzzling aspect is the purple colour, I was expecting to see red colours from the very high altitude interaction (250km) of the solar wind with Oxygen molecules but then recall being told that very energic interactions also involve Nitrogen and become purple.
This image marks the approximate peak of the display around 11:15 pm; it had disappeared by 11:30 pm (BST).
Inspecting images from later in the night, I can see additional smaller displays through till dawn.

I'm really impressed with this! I poked my nose out the window last night and completely wrote off the chances of seeing anything from Cambridge.
