NGC 5461 An emission nebula in M101

About this image

Robin Leadbetter pointed out the bright emission spectra from the nebulous patch in M101 which lies just to the north of the supernova. Here is a spectrum of NGC5461 showing emission lines of H beta, OIII, H Alpha and NII. I used H Balmer lines in Vega to calibrate the SA100 spectrum, but notice that the emission lines are redshifted with respect to the ground based state. H Beta is approx 30A redshifted. This works out at 1850 km/s which is much greater than the listed red shift of 241 km/s. I wonder where I have gone wrong!

That's a nice spectrum.  Yes the emission nebulae in M101 are very obvious in spectra of the galaxy...#1, #2, #3.
