About this image
This dim nebula was lower in the sky than I would have liked, plus a first quarter Moon was shining and the big problem was that it doesn't really get dark this time of year.
But I had finally got my OAG going again and so was tempted to try going deep on this. Alas, I had not bargained on what a pain satellites are this time of year. I took 24 images but 5 had satellites on them that went near the nebula - and sigma clipping did not sort them out due to the changing sky brightness.
The result is not as good as Richard's recent effort but I'm still optimising the focus (the filter wheel and CCD are a weighty pairing and I'm sure the focuser doesn't like it).
So, am looking forward to 600 or 900s exposures in the autumn on moonless nights. Yes, the background count can be big and a good flatfield is essential but a trial of 600s images of M101 got me to mag 20.8 so I hope to crack mag 21 without half filling the SSD with 30s exposures.
