About this image

This 8-metre dome is located near to the main building of the Athens National Observatory on top of the Hill of Nymphs (none observed). The Acropolis can be seen to the left.

The dome houses a 40cm F5.08 refractor built by the French company P. F. Gautier in 1902. It saw first light on August 30th 1905, making observations of a solar eclipse (partial from Athens). The telescope fell out of use for fifty years, but was restored and brought back into use in 2014. It is now used mainly for educational and public outreach purposes.

When I was there, the Observatory was closed, but it can be visited for viewing of the main building and observing sessions at the dome. Access is from the Apostolou Pavlou walkway. Several roads lead off the walkway uphill to the observatory site. I could not see any signposts and eventually found my way up via Dionysiou Eginitou. Warm work but well worth it, especially as the views of the Acropolis and over the city are excellent.
