6 days of giraffes and spots

About this image

We've been following a herd of 26 million giraffes across the Sun over 6 days. Well OK, not actually giraffes, but in our Society, the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, we calculated that the sunspot group AR 3327 was approximately 26 million giraffes from end to end (about 10 times the diameter of Earth). As the Sun rotates and the "tower" (collective of giraffes) crossed the solar surface, the numbers dwindled until they were totally gone and all that is left are the signs of carnage. We suspect this is due to attacks from lions and hyenas...
