Deep and wide image of M57
About this image
This is a full-frame image of M57 taken using an CMOS IMX455 sensor and a 0.28-m Celestron Edge HD. This image is actually binned 4x4 from the native sensor resolution to upload here but the 2x2 binned version is around 15 Mpix. The star FWHM is 2.3 arcsec and the LM of this stack is around 20. Given how bright the sky was I was pleased to see that it picks up the faint outer nebulosity of M57.

Very nice image given that it's summer and it doesn't get astronomically dark here.
Just a comment on the recent Forum discussion about CCD vs CMOS. I note that the Telescope Live remote telescope network have swapped out all their CCD imagers for CMOS cameras (QHY600's).
Also includes one of my favourite barred spiral galaxies. An edge-on spiral completes the line of three DSOs.
Mike - Yes, having used a large CMOS sensor I would not want to go back to CCDs. CMOS has a huge number of advantages over CCD in pretty much every area. My old KAF-6303E camera was very nice but it was very noisy compared to the IMX455 and it had really bad RBI at low temperatures. The fact that CMOS can give you high frame rate video makes focussing a doddle too. I switched to CCD in the mid nineties and went from 35mm hypered TP2415 to a sensor a few mm across but with brilliant QE. I now have finally got back to full frame.
