About this image

NGC4656/4657 (a single galaxy) imaged by the PIRATE (Physics Innovations Robotic Astronomical Telescope Explorer) in Tenerife.

The galaxy, known as the Hockey Stick, was discovered by William Herschel in March 1787. Its odd shape is probably due to its interaction with NGC4631 (the Whale Galaxy), about 0.5million ly away to the NW.

Apparent mag. 10.5. Distance c.30million ly. Size c.165,000ly.
