About this image

Discovered by William Herschel in September 1798, NGC6946 is one of the closest spiral galaxies to the Milky Way, perhaps 20-25million ly distant.

This 60-second PIRATE image shows a bright nucleus surrounded by several diffuse and often faint arms.

Diameter c.125,000ly. Apparent mag. 8.8.
