About this image

This pair of interacting galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in January 1788. NGC4490 is a spiral galaxy and is the larger of the pair. NGC4485 is an irregular galaxy.

This short 90-second PIRATE exposure shows the rather loose structure of the spiral, with one arm seemingly reaching up towards the smaller irregular.

Distance c.27million ly. Separation c.24,000ly. Diameters: c.49,000ly, c.18,000ly.
