About this image

A COAST image of this 8th magnitude class VIII (loosely concentrated towards centre) globular cluster. It was discovered by Charles Messier in May 1764. The cluster lies relatively close to the galactic centre at a distance of about 5,500ly.

Diameter c.70-90ly. Distance c.25,000ly. Age c.12billion yr.
