Title

20230727_230859 - a fireball and its spectrum

About this image

This fireball of apparent magnitude -4 and its spectrum was recorded by my Leeds_N (UFO Capture) camera equipped with a diffraction grating. It was also captured on a couple of my north-facing RMS cameras. Single-station analysis categorised it as a sporadic, but the multi-station solution from GMN classifies it as a DCD (delta Cepheid) which is a shower on the IAU MDC's Working List (provisional showers). The DCD's were proposed by Peter Jenniskens in 2018 from observations of 7 meteors.

The processing and reduction of the spectrum were performed by Bill Ward, who noted that its profile is quite similar to that of the Perseids.

I was hopeful of recording several Perseid spectra this month but the unstable weather thwarted my plans for August.
