About this image

This planetary nebula was discovered by the American astronomer Edward Pickering in May 1883.

The image is perhaps interesting as much for what it does not show as for what it does. Considerably larger instruments reveal a much bigger, extremely faint outer shell surrounding the blue nebula. Within the object seen in the image lies the central star surrounded by a complex web of shells. Observing these phenomena is probably a significant challenge for amateur observers.

Apparent magnitude 11.0. Distance c.4-8,000ly. Size 0.2ly (with outer shell, not visible here, c.2ly).

Bortle 7/8.
