About this image

The nightside of Venus imaged in the near infra-red, with a comparison heat-map image from WinJupos in the same orientation. The image is a stack of just over 1600 frames of 250 msec, or about 6.7 minutes total exposure, processed in PIPP, Autostakkert! and Registax. There is some correlation between the dark markings, which represent the higher elevations on Venus that are cooler and therefore emit less in the infra-red than the lower hotter areas. Masking the crescent of Venus eliminates multiple ghost reflections and diffraction effects sometimes visible in such images, although the method is not without its own problems.
