About this image

This is the first light image from my new camera, an ASI071. The 071 replaces an ASI294 camera I owned. I was always impressed by the sensitivity of the 294 camera but was never comfortable with its rendering of HII regions; they came out rather orange-looking due to the quite strong response of the green channel of the Bayer matrix at the red end of the spectrum. The 071 camera, on the other hand, has a response closer to that which I get from my QSI mono camera, and although it is less sensitive than modern rear-illuminated Sony sensors, I prefer the colours it produces.

The object in question is the centre of the three star-like objects up and left of the centre. It is a globular cluster orbiting M31.

This is Callum's challenge to the deep sky section for September. Unfortunately, I managed to gather only a little data due to persistent clouds, but I am pleased with the result.

Mayall II always reminds me of Mickey Mouse's head.
